On 27 August 2019 the day had finally come: I graduated from teacher training college with an 8.5! I was so happy and incredibly proud of myself, because becoming a teacher was something I had dreamt of since I was a little girl. And this, I was sure, was what I would do for the rest of my life.
“For the rest of my life…”
In the past 4 years that I worked as a primary school teacher, I was signed off several times with burnout and stress related complaints. Somewhere deep down I thought the profession was not (or no longer) meant for me, yet every time that thought came up I 𝐝𝐮𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧. Hadn’t I studied for this? Wasn’t this my dream? Wasn’t this what I was going to do for the rest of my life? I started to doubt myself and became confused. I no longer wanted to stand with my heels dug in; I wanted to “flow”!
That working with children is one of my greatest passions was, at least, very clear to me. Perhaps I needed to broaden my horizons and look further afield. After all, I had tried every form of work in education, so I could say I had truly done everything I could to make the profession workable for me.
When I suffered a serious concussion in April and was forced to recover in complete rest, I knew for certain: it was time to change course, and I would no longer dig my heels in against my own thoughts. What is more, I felt with every fibre of my being that something would come my way that I would be HUGELY excited about.
And guess what?! It did!
From 1 November I will be starting as a Family and Personal Assistant with a wonderful, lively and loving family through @thefamilyassistant.nl . I get to care for the children, challenge them educationally, spend lots of time with them, give them cuddles () and also make an active contribution as the parents’ PA on the business side.
