The difference between a Nanny and a Family Assistant

What are the differences between a Nanny and a Family Assistant? It is important for parents to understand these differences so they can make a good choice in which support best helps their family. Also, as a future Nanny or Family Assistant, you want to know well where your qualities lie before you apply.

Focus on the children versus focus on family life

The biggest difference between a Nanny and a Family Assistant is the focus. A Nanny focuses primarily on the care and development of the children. From changing diapers to helping with homework, the Nanny is always there for the children. The Nanny also helps with cooking, shopping, keeping the children's rooms tidy and educational challenge. The Nanny monitors parenting and development and encourages the children's independence.

A Family Assistant focuses more on the organization of the entire family. She schedules appointments for such things as the doctor and dentist, she books trips, and she interacts with any business PA to make sure that work and personal life blend pleasantly. A Family Assistant is really the parents' right hand. She directs any other staff and manages the maintenance of the house and cars.

A Family Assistant can also take on PA duties if, for example, one of the parents has their own business. The duties of a Family Assistant are somewhat more customized, depending on the specific needs of a family, than those of a Nanny.

Professional background differs

Although both Nannies and Family Assistants have extensive experience with children, their educational backgrounds may differ. Nannies often have a background in childcare and may have specific certifications in pedagogy. Family Assistants often have a broader background, such as experience as a Personal Assistant, in the administrative field or in hospitality management. This experience fits well with the multifaceted and organizational work of a Family Assistant.
